The atmosphere was loud and proud at the Muhlenberg wrestling team's first home meet of the season. The program is on the rise, and the buzz was evident with a nice-sized crowd, cheerleaders, a DJ, a pack of Cub Scouts to present the color guard and Muley the Mule all in attendance.
Ian Gimbar and Lenny Smith put a cap on the festive evening by winning the last two bouts of a 37-10 loss to defending Centennial Conference champion Ursinus, which is ranked 21st in Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and 23rd by D3wrestle.com
Gimbar won his bout 13-3, scoring four takedowns and two near-falls in his victory. Named the CC wrestler of the week last week, Gimbar now is 7-0 in his first year of wrestling for the Mules.
Smith's win came by way of injury default 1:20 in to the match. He was in control of the match early, up 4-1 with two quick takedowns when his opponent could not continue. The junior improved to 4-3 on the year.
Both Gimbar (pictured above) and Smith were fan favorites of the crowd on hand, which included members of the football team and Muhlenberg wrestling alumni.
